At the June meeting of Chelmsford TUC delegates welcomed the support that had been given by local trade unionists and the public to their Workers’ Memorial Day event, held in Central Park on April 28. Thanks were recorded for the excellent speech by Dan McCarthy, National Vice-President of the NASUWT. The text of his speech can be read on our In Your Workplace section on the Health and Safety page.
The May Rally was another success; this took place at The Asylum, 48 Viaduct Road, with a speech by a young trade unionist from Cambridge, and excellent entertainment being provided by top professional musicians Rick Christian and Robb Johnson.
Delegates were pleased to note that their activities to promote the benefits of being in a trade union had been featured in a report published by the South East Region of the TUC.
As part of the Trades Council’s ongoing campaign to prevent any attempt by the Essex Success Regime to downgrade the Accident and Emergency Services at Broomfield and Southend Hospitals, a number of meetings have been held to plan further activities. This will include a motorcade from Halstead, Braintree, Southend and Chelmsford which will meet in Basildon on 15th July. Delegates also noted the warnings by the Southend Hospital consultant Dr. J. O’Brien, of the “dire outcome” if the A&E proposals go ahead.
