Chelmsford TUC

At the December meeting of Chelmsford TUC delegates agreed to support The Living Wage Campaign by working with Citizens UK in order to increase the number of firms in Chelmsford paying the Living Wage. Two speakers from Citizens UK, Jack Swain and Jean Knutsen, outlined the work of their campaigning group and explained why the living wage, as proposed by the Living Wage Foundation, is needed to raise people from poverty levels, and why the government-sponsored living wage is insufficient.

Delegates reviewed the excellent performance of Banner Theatre’s “Chicago, the great teachers’ strike”. They also agreed to participate in the Action for Rail activity at Chelmsford railway station on January 3 when trade unionists and local community groups will be distributing postcards calling for a publicly owned railway with affordable fares.

Chelmsford TUC is supporting the “Save Our Post Offices” Campaign and also the local campaign to defend the NHS from further cuts. The Trades Union Council will be encouraging their affiliates and others to participate in the national demonstration in support of the NHS which will be held in London on March 4. The next meeting will be on January 4 when delegates will celebrate the New Year with a festive meal.
