ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2012

Chelmsford TUC, established in 1899 and with 29 affiliated branches representing over 8,000 trade unionists, held its AGM on 1 February. In adopting the Annual Report delegates were pleased to record the wide range of activities carried out during the year. From exhibitions to public meetings, marking Workers’ Memorial Day, anti-cuts campaigns and a brilliant performance by Banner Theatre, it has been a year of non-stop activity.

The following were elected to Office for 2012: President: Colin Rolfe. Chairperson: Andrew Coburn. Vice-Chairpersons: Hazel Corby, John Boreham, Marion Wilson. Secretary: Malcolm Wallace. Treasurer: Chris Habib. Auditors: David Johnson, Jackie Scannell.

Delegates approved a resolution for the Trades Union Councils’ Annual Conference which supported the proposed HS2 railway. However, delegates felt that if the taxpayer is to pay £32.7bn for the scheme it should be publicly owned on the basis that it is the people that should get the reward, not private enterprise.

Plans for a rally on May Day and an event to mark Workers’ Memorial Day are being finalised. The Trades Union Council will continue working with Chelmsford Against The Cuts and trade unions in opposing the Government’s attack on pensions, welfare benefits, education, public service jobs and bus passes.
