Delegates to Chelmsford TUC were delighted at the success of their May Day Rally, Workers’ Memorial Day Service and the One World Event in Central Park. A meeting to establish a group to make Chelmsford a Transition Town will be held in Christ Church on June 10 at 7.30pm and a series of events to mark Black History Month are planned. Plans are also in progress for the Trades Council to stage a a public meeting against the cuts in public services in September, followed by an evening of international solidarity.

Of particular concern to delegates was the recent attack by Israeli forces against the ships that tried to break the blockade of Gaza. It was agreed to write to W. Hague MP, N.Clegg MP, H. Harman MP, S. Burns MP and the Israeli Ambassador condemning the recent attack on the aid ships, and calling for a full independent enquiry and the end of all restrictions on the movement of people and goods from and to Gaza.Delegates agreed to promote the TUC’s latest leaflet on Palestine which calls for a boycott of all goods produced from the illegal Israeli settlements in Palestine.

A discussion took place on the results of the General Election and the meeting heard that over 7000 leaflets against the BNP were distributed in the community and at social events including the Love Music, Hate Racism event.

Delegates agreed to write to the Co-operative Movement to express concern about its support for Trust schools. In a discussion on local workplace issues it was quite clear that stress is becoming a much more serious issue for trade unionists.
