APRIL MEETING

At the monthly meeting of Chelmsford TUC delegates finalised their plans for a series of events. To mark Workers’ Memorial Day on 28 April there will be an exhibition in the public square of Chelmsford Library and a service of remembrance in Central Park at 1pm. A public meeting will take place at 7.30pm on 1 May (International Workers’ Day)at Friends Meeting House, with the guest speaker being Steve Hart, Regional Secretary of Unite the Union. The Trades Council will have a stall at the One World Event on 3 May in Central Park.

Local groups are to be invited to a meeting the Trades Council is organising on the environment when the question of Chelmsford becoming a Transition Town will be explored. This will take place on 10 June in Christ Church at 7.30pm. For information contact 01245601373.

A debate took place on Trust Schools and it was agreed that the NUT’s opposition to such schools be supported. Reports were received from delegates on activities that had taken place recently in the workplace, including disputes in the Fire Service, the Job Centres, and the railways. The ongoing privatisation of services within Essex County Council was also raised as a matter of deep concern.
