June General Meeting

Chelmsford TUC reviewed the two public events held since its last meeting - Workers’ Memorial Day and May Day. Both of these were well attended and highly successful. Plans are now being considered to develop the cultural theme introduced this year and to include international contributions for next year’s May Rally.

Delegates congratulated Thompsons Solicitors for hosting the evening to celebrate the visit of Carmen Mayusa to Chelmsford following her release from prison in Colombia. During the evening Carmen thanked all those in Chelmsford who had helped to obtain her release.

Delegates deplored ECC’s proposals to privatise its services especially after the bad experiences of former privatisations. The meeting heard a report from the Secretary who had attended a meeting in the House of Commons on returning the railways to public ownership. He said that a copy of “A People’s Railway”, published by the RMT, had been sent to S. Burns MP.

A discussion took place on the parliamentary crisis and the way in which some MPs have abused their expenses. Thanks were recorded to all those who had distributed over 10,000 leaflets against racism during the election campaign and it was agreed that we would strengthen our links with all democratic parties and organisations in the town and oppose all those who seek to divide our community.

During a report on the Annual Conference of Trades Councils it was noted that MaltaDirect, which is owned by a Maltese trade union, used an excellent range of hotels on the island, all of which are trade union organised.
