In August 2006, Thomson Holidays announced that their Glasgow Call Centre would close in December with the loss of 450 jobs. The Centre has been open since 1999, and the announcement came as a shock to its staff particularly as the announcement was made to the media before any consultation had taken place.
The firm has praised its workforce and promotes itself as a company that likes to make people happy; an ambition it says, that it applies to its staff as well as to its customers. Why then is it so determined to close its Glasgow Call Centre, and why has it failed to consult its staff on such a serious issue as their future livelehood?
Speaking to an Emergency Motion at the 2006 TUC, Gerry Doherty, General Secretary of the TSSA, called on the General Council to circulate affiliates with a request to ask their members to boycott Thomson Holiday products should this matter remain unresolved. This was supported by the TUC.
Chelmsford TUC supports the TSSA’s call to boycott Thomsons and asks all trade unionists to do likewise.
